2018 – Green Fuse – Finished
Green Fuse – a full-sized bed quilt – was part of the Rochester Modern Quilt Guild’s “Taking Flight” show (September 29, 2018).
I used a bright lime thread for all the quilting.
I quilted florals on the white area, seedlike ovals on the green, and roots on the gray.
Also among the roots was part of the Dylan Thomas poem “The force that through the green fuse drives the flower.”
More quilting details in next post.
2018 – Ten Squared Plus Five
At last, the Rochester Modern Quilt Guild’s first show, “Taking Flight,” is over (September 29) and I’ve nearly recovered. It was a huge success; we had lots of visitors, lots of quilts, and lots of happy vendors. It was also a huge job creating a show out of whole cloth, a job I’m glad to pass along to another guild member.
So, here is a quilt I made for the show. You can also see it hanging lower center in the show photo.
I used three packs of mini-charms (2-1/2″ squares) sorted by color, then added a few extra black squares to counterbalance at the bottom. To contrast with all those straight lines, I quilted it in a spiral on my Viking.
The back matched the fabric of the yellow square.
This is now with my new grand niece in Virginia.
2018 -Green Fuse
Wow, it’s been over a year since I posted on the blog!
Since the 2017 Genesee Valley Quilt Fest, I’ve been extremely busy with two projects: downsizing from a 4-bedroom house to a 2-bedroom condo, and chairing the first quilt show of the Rochester Modern Quilt Guild.
The show will be 10-5 on Saturday, September 29 at First Unitarian Church of Rochester, 220 Winton Road, Rochester, NY 14610. Hope to see you there!
And I’ve managed in the meantime to make a few quilts. I hope to cover them in upcoming posts, but here’s a preview of the free-motion floral quilting on a new queen quilt I’m calling “Green Fuse.” It’s inspired by Dylan Thomas’s “The force that through the green fuse drives the flower.”
This quilt should be finished in time to be part of the “Taking Flight” show. More to come!
2016 New Applique Project
Inspired by the silk applique class I took in September from Chris Wickert, I’m moving on to an original, all-applique project. Here are the steps I’ve taken so far: [If you’re seeing this on Facebook, please click on the photo to see all steps.)
With a fistful of felt pens, I auditioned colors. The fabrics will have much greater variation, but this is a general sense of a progression from muted purples through nearly orange at the bottom. The background fabric is solid black, which should help the tile colors stand out. I used a chalk pencil to mark the placement of the appliques. I think I’m ready now to begin cutting fabrics and stiff interfacing to suggest the dimension of tiles.
More to come.
Genesee Valley Quilt Club – 2015 Quiltfest – My Entries
A final post about the 2015 Quiltfest. It was a magnificent show: nearly 700 quilts on display, a huge vendor mall, nationally known speakers and teachers, the Iron Quilter and jelly roll contests, a fashion show . . . we’re exhausted but happy.
Here are the four quilts I displayed in the show.
Genesee Valley Quilt Club – Quiltfest 2015
GVQC Quiltfest is over. And while all of us volunteers are happy that it’s over, we are also happy it went so well. What a great assemblage of quilts of all levels – nearly 700. And a vendor mall with 65 booths.
Here are my entries, as they hung in the exhibits. I’ll be posting more photos of some of the award winners and other quilts that caught my eye.
Quiltfest Entries
Dropped off four quilts this morning for the Genesee Valley Quilt Club’s Quiltfest:
Neo-Baltimore Petals
Courthouse Squares
In Jest
Mock Kenzie
Hope to see you there!
Rochester Modern Quilt Guild (RMQG)
Patricia’s Fabrics in East Rochester staged another of their huge quilt shows on 14 March, featuring works from their students and other local fiber workers. RMQG was assigned the head of the stairs for our educational display to show what the term “modern quilt” encompasses.
Two of my quilts are on the bench display on the left. Later some of us used a member’s antique Singer to attract more interest. What fun!
